چکیده

This paper presents biologically inspired neural controllers for generating motor patterns in a quadruped robot. Sets of arti cial neural networks are presented which provide 1) pattern generation and gait control, allowing continuous passage from walking to trotting to galloping, 2) control of sitting and lying down behaviors, and 3) control of scratching. The neural controllers consist of sets of oscillators composed of leaky-integrator neurons, which control pairs of exor-extensor muscles attached to each joint. The networks receive sensory feedback proportional to the contraction of simulated muscles and to joint exion. Similarly to what is observed in cats, locomotion can be initiated by either applying tonic (i.e. non-oscillating) input to the locomotion network or by sensory feedback from extending the legs. The networks are implemented in a quadruped robot. It is shown that computation can be carried out in real time and that the networks can generate the above mentioned motor behaviors.

Biologically-Inspired Locomotion Controller for a Quadruped Walking Robot: Analog IC Implementation of a CPG-Based Controller

The present paper proposes analog integrated circuit (IC) implementation of a biologically inspired controller in quadruped robot locomotion. Our controller is based on the central pattern generator (CPG), which is known as the biological neural network that generates fundamental rhythmic movements in locomotion of animals. Many CPG-based controllers for robot locomotion have been proposed, but...

An Analog CMOS Circuit for Locomotion Control in Quadruped Walking Robot

We propose an analog CMOS circuit for developing a biologically-inspired locomotion controller for a quadruped walking robot. The proposed circuit is based on the biological neural network, called the central pattern generator (CPG), that can generate rhythmic movements for locomotion of animals, such as walking, running, swimming, and flying. We constructed a CPG model from the WilsonCowan neu...

Biologically inspired adaptive walking of a quadruped robot.

We describe here the efforts to induce a quadruped robot to walk with medium-walking speed on irregular terrain based on biological concepts. We propose the necessary conditions for stable dynamic walking on irregular terrain in general, and we design the mechanical and the neural systems by comparing biological concepts with those necessary conditions described in physical terms. PD-controller...

Quadrupedal Robot Locomotion: A Biologically Inspired Approach and Its Hardware Implementation

A bioinspired locomotion system for a quadruped robot is presented. Locomotion is achieved by a spiking neural network (SNN) that acts as a Central Pattern Generator (CPG) producing different locomotion patterns represented by their raster plots. To generate these patterns, the SNN is configured with specific parameters (synaptic weights and topologies), which were estimated by a metaheuristic ...

Evolving Symmetric and Modular Neural Network Controllers for Multilegged Robots

Controllers for multilegged robots are characterized by modularity and symmetry. However, the controller symmetries necessary for generating appropriate gaits are often difficult to determine analytically. This paper utilizes a nature-inspired approach called Evolution of Network Symmetry and mOdularity (ENSO) to evolve such controllers automatically. It uses group theory to mutate symmetry sys...
